Vancouver, BC RBA for October 25, 2013‏

This is Nature Vancouver's Bird Alert for Friday, October 25th, sponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Friday, October 25
A juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK along with a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 6 SANDERLING, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, about 8 AMERICAN PIPITS and 77 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (along with the usual swarms of ducks, dunlin and plover!) were seen between 96th and 104th Streets along the Boundary Bay dike in Delta.

The first seasonal report of a NORTHERN SHRIKE came from Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen; also at the same location, a leucistic AMERICAN WIGEON was seen by spotting scope offshore.

Rather late were 2 CASPIAN TERN (1 adult and 1 juvenile) at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, along with BLACK TURNSTONE and BLACK OYSTERCATCHER.

The GREAT EGRET is still present near the viewing tower at Pitt Lake marsh in Pitt Meadows.


Thursday, October 24
A PACIFIC LOON was seen feeding off of Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver

The BLUE JAY is still being seen at both MacDonald Beach Park in Richmond and across the river in the Southlands area of Vancouver.  It is foraging for acorns from the oaks on the Richmond side and flying back across the river with them.  Look around the oak trees.


Tuesday, October 22
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD has been present for several days at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum on the UBC campus


Sunday, October 20
Another RUSTY BLACKBIRD was reported from the Grant Narrows area.  It was originally seen near the last bend in the road before the Pitt Lake parking area.

30 BRANT, 30 PACIFIC LOONS, 25 COMMON MURRES, 1 HEERMANN'S GULL and 8 PIGEON GUILLEMOT were seen at Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, WA.

A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen at the marina entrance at Point Roberts.


Saturday, October 19
10 MARBLED MURRELETS were seen near the Grebe Islets off Kloochman Park in West Vancouver.

A BARRED OWL, a mixed flock of AUDUBON'S WARBLERS and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 3 HORNED GREBES
and a female GREATER SCAUP were seen at the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver.
