Birding Notes from Semiahmoo 11/24/13‏ Diane Birsner

The Mountain Bluebird was seen on the spit in the fields west of the road and south of the southernmost condominiums. A small flock of  Canvasback (28) and good numbers of Ruddy Duck (350+) were observed in Drayton Harbor across the road from the County Park. Of special note was an immature Cooper's Hawk. At close range we were able to see two bands - a silver band on the right leg with no discernable marcation, and a green band on the left leg marked D7. We are submitting the sighting to reportband.gov. In the meantime, if anyone knows where and when this bird was banded it would be interesting to know.

Hi Dave and Diane,

I'd be interested to know the results of your report. I have seen two banded COHAs recently. One immature out at Lummi Bay, and an adult was seen in Fairhaven. Both had silver bands, but I was unable to read the numbers. There is a guy on Vancouver Island that has been banding COHAs.

cheers,   Doug Brown
There are people in Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria banding COHA's with colored bands.

A bander in Vancouver uses green. You should report to the BBL as you would any other bands. Also, Bud has her contact info. It's very possible that a silver band only on a COHA is one that was re-located from Sea-Tac. Is there any way to crop into your photo Doug to read even part of that silver band?

Ed Deal and Jack Bettesworth use Blue, purple and orange in Seattle, and the folks in Victoria use red and black.

Re: Juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Joan Bird and I saw this same juvenile, D 7, on the dock at Blaine a month or so ago. There is a banding project going on in the Vancouver area, and from what I found out it is one of those Coopers.
